Create the coastal cottage look you have always wanted and I have some tried and true very affordable ideas to get you started. Coastal Cottage décor style is all about living with nature and capturing the essence of a long walk on a beach, striking the balance between casual and a touch of traditional. Collecting shells, driftwood, starfish and finding a way to bring a piece of it home is easier than you might think. Whether you live in a condo, apartment, or lucky enough to live on or near the beach, creating the coastal cottage look is so doable and fun.
Start With White and Bright Walls
The bright tropical natural lighting that we enjoy in Florida is the perfect inspiration for a white backdrop on your walls creating the perfect canvas for the coastal cottage look. One of my other favorite colors for a coastal cottage look is Benjamin Moore’s Silver Satin. Use Benjamin Moore’s Decorator White for trim. This beautifully transforms your walls into that “old Florida beach cottage feeling.”
Carefully chosen colors and accessories bring the room together for a cohesive, relaxed feeling. Be sure to choose sea glass accents, sea foam green and blues. Turquoise in every room is a must, even if it’s a container of shells mixed with sea glass.
Spice it up with an Accent Wall
For a little beach drama, select a wall in the entry, an inset shelf alcove in your wall or in your powder room. Cover it with a cloth wall covering or something striking such as a tropical pattern or stripe, or a beautiful print grass cloth wall covering such as this White Leaf Print Natural Weave as shown below from Houzz.
Tropical Inspired Kitchen
My favorite tropical inspired kitchen is done in all white. Accented with pale gray/blue cabinets, bead board or plank cabinet doors makes for a great coastal cottage look. Use sea glass tones around the backsplash, island or bar. Personally, I love the combination of coral and turquoise and use it in my home, but sea foam and pale blue is another great relaxing color combination.
Center Piece of the Coastal Cottage Home
If there is one place that brings the entire house together for that coastal cottage look – it’s the coffee table or entry table. This sets the tone for your home. Display your favorite nautical elements – seashells, driftwood, glass jars with sea glass. An oblong Capiz shell filled with some of these elements is a delightful way to display some of your favorites.
Design a Bookshelf
One of my absolute favorites. Pick a shelf that is already a sea-inspired color or one that you can easily paint. I’m loving chalkboard paint these days. You can tint Benjamin Moore chalkboard paint to any color carried by Benjamin Moore and this paint can present as distressed. Creatively adorned by accents from the sea such as starfish (which can also be painted), driftwood, shells, artwork and other elements will give it that “just washed up on the beach look.”
I love my white plantation shutters. Almost every window in my house has them. Some windows only have the shutters, as in my favorite room – my sun room, which doubles as my inspiration room.
One very needed window treatment in my house is the white linen roman shades on my glass entryway doors. These shades serve a dual purpose, shielding the hot afternoon Florida sun from burning my corneas while coordinating perfectly with the coastal theme of my foyer, bringing a light airy feel to the area.
For other window treatments, I keep them light and airy and remember to always hang just below the ceiling on the wall to visually promote height in the room.
I am all about casual and comfort. Combining styles of furniture in and around your home is very trendy and sets a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, whether it’s white wicker with tropical print cushions in the sun room or maybe a couple of bamboo chairs or stool. You can paint Bamboo – so think flea markets ! Add a couple of garden stools for extra seating.
Colorful cushions pull everything together for a relaxed, casual look that begs for a garden party featuring your favorite umbrella drink.
While sand would be the ultimate casual flooring, save that for the trip to the beach. A beautiful option for your home is natural fiber rugs such as sisal, jute or sea grass. Some of the more modern styles have a contemporary look allowing for trim in coastal colors, such as sea foam or coral.
No doubt your many trips to the beach have netted a pretty amazing collection of shells and other bounty from the sea. Display these jewels in decorative bowls in every room. Seeing these will take you back to a favorite trip or time at the beach. Don’t forget to add a tropical plant or two for your home. They are a beautiful accent and great for the air quality in your home.
FYI – If you are in need of a place to get shells for your inspiration, a great source to order shells and other jewels – Shell Outlet – Caribbean Imports in Madeira Beach, FL. They stock a great selection of shells, coral, sea glass and Capiz, everything you will need for your Coastal Cottage inspiration and will ship directly to you.
